Parents, caregivers
and keiki enrolled in INPEACE’s Keiki Steps program participated in an outdoor
planting at Nānākuli Elementary in May.
The planting is part
of INPEACE’s Kupu Ola project, also known as the native plant outdoor
classroom. Kupu Ola, which means to
sprout or bring forth life, is a partnership effort between INPEACE and the Department
of Education.
The goal of Kupu
Ola is to empower families and children with the planting knowledge of native
Hawaiian ancestors in an effort to preserve and perpetuate that knowledge for
future generations. Families who participate
will learn how to plant using the Hawaiian moon calendar and will learn how to start a native garden at home.
In the next few months,
community members will participate in the preparation and cultivation of two
outdoor classrooms at Nānākuli and Kamaile Elementary.
